UNL’s research-rich environment offers undergraduates a wide-range of opportunities to engage in cutting-edge research. Under the watchful eye of their faculty research advisers, undergraduates develop important research skills, apply coursework to important, “real world” problems, improve ability to communicate, and become more confident, self-directed learners.

Why Mentor an Undergraduate Student?

  • Questions asked by bright undergraduate students new to research can offer fresh insight.
  • Teaching a new undergraduate about research helps you gain a new perspective, allowing you to evaluate the approaches in your research that do and do not work.
  • Communicating with a budding researcher gives you practice speaking to non-scientists. Use the opportunities to talk with undergraduates and the broader community about your research.
  • Invest in the next generation of researchers. You may be training a future colleague!

Benefits for Undergraduate Students

  • Research is an effective way to learn. Students learn through doing, applying what they’ve learned in the classroom to real problems. Students develop critical thinking skills and learn to think outside of the box to research effectively.
  • Students gain hands-on experience of research as a profession. Experience in a lab or in the stacks gives students a taste of research as a future career, and they can then make more informed decisions about their career options.
  • Students will make contact and form new networks with other professors, graduate students, and professionals through you. These connections will yield additional opportunities for the student.
