Ambassadors

Undergraduate Research Ambassadors are available to speak about their research experiences through UCARE, how to find a faculty advisor, and how to apply for funding.

  • Hometown: Grand Island, NE
  • Major: Biology with minors in Spanish and Chemistry
  • Year in School: Senior
  • Random fact: Even though I was born in the United States, English was not my first language. I am also fluent in Vietnamese and am also learning Spanish.
  • Most memorable moment as a UNL student: Attending my first Husker football game. Living in Nebraska my whole life, I have never been to a Husker football game until I came here. Now I know what all the hype is about! Go Huskers!
  • On-campus activities: Pre-Dental Club, Honors Program, Vietnamese Student Association, W.E.B DuBois Honors Society, ASUN
  • Something you are looking forward to this academic year as a UCARE ambassador: I am most looking forward to interacting with students and educating them about the importance of undergraduate research as a way of interactive learning outside of the classroom.
  • Plans after graduation: Hopefully, to attend dental school. Fingers crossed!!
  • Hobbies/Interests: Traveling, playing the violin and piano, reading, trying something new whether it be food or activity

  • Major:  Global Studies/Spanish

  • Random fact:  I love to bake apple pies.
  • Most memorable moments as a UNL student:  My study abroad trips to Turkey and Spain!
  • On-campus activities: I am a member of the EN Thompson Scholars and the Honors Program.
  • Something you are looking forward to this academic year as a UCARE ambassador:  I am looking forward to meeting new students who care about research, gaining more public speaking skills, and making connections with different members of the academic community at UNL.
  • Plans after graduation:  After graduation, I am considering teaching abroad, various internships, and law school.
  • Hobbies/interests: I am a big animal lover! I ride my horse, Molly, regularly. I also teach therapeutic riding lessons to handicapped children and adults. In addition to animals, I love sports, reading, sewing, and traveling.

  • Major:  Biochemistry
  • Year in school:  Junior
  • Random fact:  I have a Russian Dwarf hamster named Hemingway and he’s really cute.
  • Most memorable moments as a UNL student: Moving on campus early to rush and just experiencing college for the first time
  • On campus activities: I do research at a brain lab under the direction of Dr. Cheadle with a UCARE grant, I am in the Honors Program, NU-Meds, Pre-Health Club, and I work in a gnotobiotic mouse facility located on East Campus.
  • Something you are looking forward to this academic year as a UCARE ambassador: I am excited to share my experience and the results of my summer research project as well as learn about other research being conducted on campus.
  • Plans after graduation:  I am going to apply to either medical school or graduate school, higher education is the way to go for me
  • Hobbies/interests: I love animals, mainly cats and horses. I like bike riding, sitting down with a good book, trying and eating new foods. I am interested in neuroscience.

  • Major:  Biological Sciences 
  • Year in school:  5th Year Senior
  • Random fact:  I love to travel. Summer of 2013 I worked in Tampa, Florida at a zoo. This summer I was in Berkeley, California working in a molecular cell biology lab. It’s amazing the places you’ll go, the things you will learn, and the people you will meet when you are open to new experiences.
  • Most memorable moments as a UNL student:  I’ve spent the past three years working in a ruminant nutrition lab on East Campus. The professor I worked for had just opened his lab, and I was his first hire at UNL. He, his wife and I spent the whole summer setting up the lab and running experiments. The relationships I have built, the things I have learned, and the opportunities I have been presented with are truly unforgettable. 
  • On campus activities: I have participated in UCARE for two years and this will also be my second year as an ambassador. For the past year, I have been an academic tutor for the Student Support Services on campus. I am a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, Sigma Alpha Lambda, and Cather Circle. I also like to participate in intermural sports at the rec.
  • Something you are looking forward to this academic year as a UCARE ambassador:  I really enjoy being able to share my personal experiences with others and trying to get them interested/excited about research.
  • Plans after graduation:  I am in the process of applying to graduate schools. I am hoping to get into a PhD program in molecular and cell biology. I would like to continue work in research.
  • Hobbies/interests: I have a very outgoing family and social circle so I enjoy spending any free time I have with them. I grew up on a ranch so I enjoy the outdoors. When I’m at school, I spend most of my free time on campus tutoring and studying, working in the lab, and lots of time spent with friends.

  • Random fact:  I enjoy spending time talking about science with little kids.
  • Most memorable moments as a UNL student:  When I was offered in-state tuition to study at UNL and obtained a position in the lab.  Demonstrating simple chemistry experiments for toddlers and seeing their curiosity about science has also been a memorable moment for me as a UNL student.

  • Something you are looking forward to this academic year as a UCARE ambassador: Interacting with prospective students and their parents to give suggestions on college application based on my personal experience. Interacting with university faculty/administrators to present the outcomes of UCARE programs and to make connections.  Interacting with UCARE ambassadors/staff from diverse backgrounds to build friendships.

  • Major:  Biological Systems Engineering (Minors: Energy Science, International Engineering

  • Random fact:  I studied abroad 3 times (Japan, Costa Rica, Iceland)
  • Most memorable moments as a UNL student:  Getting accepted, getting college paid for via scholarships/grants, declaring Engineering, Getting on dean’s list for 3.5 and up GPA, doing undergraduate research, getting accepted into the McNair research program, getting major scholarship funding to study abroad (Global Gateway, Gilman, Duke/OTS, Susan Buffet, and presenting undergraduate research for UCARE at UNL and McNair at the University of California-Berkeley.
  • On campus activities:  I am a member of the Environmental Leadership Program, Tri Beta, Engineers without Borders, Undergraduate Research, etc.
  • Something you are looking forward to this academic year as a UCARE ambassador:  Continuing my research and working on my second publication as an undergraduate researcher.
  • Plans after graduation:  Either go into industry in renewable energy generation on a utility scale, or go to Graduate school to get a Ph.D.
  • Hobbies/interests: Traveling, Watching movies, playing sports, Playing Video Games, etc.

  • Name:  Jared Beyersdorf
  • Hometown:  Bellevue, Nebraska
  • Major:  Biological Systems Engineering
  • Year in school:  Senior
  • Random fact:  I can write fluently in Gregg’s Shorthand (Google it).
  • Most memorable moments as a UNL student:  The strongest memories I have as a UNL student have been as a part of the travel team in our chapter of Engineers Without Borders. We spent three weeks in Madagascar working to improve the community’s water quality, but the parts that stick out the most are the fun that we had in-country soaking in the local culture and of course playing with lemurs.

  • Something you are looking forward to this academic year as a UCARE ambassador:  I’m looking forward to getting new students excited about trying out research and the future opportunities that it can open for them.
  • Plans after graduation:  After my time here at UNL, I plan to enter a dual MD/PhD program in order to receive a strong medical and scientific education. After obtaining both degrees, I plan to pursue further clinical training with the end goal of becoming a physician scientist with a productive laboratory and clinical practice.

  • Major:  Chemical Engineering

  • Random fact:  Never broken a bone despite the fact that I played many contact sports in high school and still today
  • Most memorable moments as a UNL student:  Husker gamedays, both home and away
  • On campus activities: Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, American Institute of Chemical Engineers
  • Something you are looking forward to this academic year as a UCARE ambassador:  Meeting new people; other ambassadors, faculty, and students
  • Plans after graduation:  Pursue a PhD in Biomolecular Engineering or Biomedical Engineering

  • Name:  Sydney Gaylord
  • Hometown:  Lincoln, NE
  • Major:  Psychology

  • Random fact:  I have a golden doodle puppy named Floyd
  • Most memorable moments as a UNL student:  Joining my research lab.  I had no idea what to expect going into it but joining my lab has ignited in me a passion for research and made me even more enthusiastic about becoming a psychologist.

  • Something you are looking forward to this academic year as a UCARE ambassador:  Helping other students realize how critical research is to all fields of study and to promote the continued execution of research while encouraging other students to become research assistants themselves. I hope that by sharing my experience with other students, they won’t miss out on the opportunities and benefits being a research assistant imparts.
  • Plans after graduation:  I hope to be accepted into the Social-Personality Psychology Ph.D. program at UNL

  • Random fact: I have donated over four gallons of blood to the Nebraska Community Blood Bank.
  • Most memorable moments as a UNL student? Being involved in student government and game day Saturdays!
  • On campus activities: ASUN: Electoral Commission, Student Court Associate Justice, Committee for Fees Allocation, Appointments Board, Government Liaison Committee, and Pi Sigma Alpha
  • Something you are looking forward to this academic year as a UCARE ambassador: I’m looking forward to getting students excited about research. Too many times people think research is only conducted in a lab, but I want to show people research can involve every part of life.
  • What are your plans after graduation? After graduation I plan to work for either the State of Nebraska or the Federal government.
  • Hobbies/interests: I like to watch movies, go camping, and cooking.

  • Random fact:  I didn’t get my ears pierced until I was 20 years old.
  • Most memorable moments as a UNL student: Being on campus during football games in definitely an experience I will never forget and something I always looked forward to in the fall. The unity that is felt on football Saturdays is unlike anything else. 
  • On campus activities: I was a member of the UNL Equestrian team for three years. I was also the Vice President of Alpha Lambda Delta, an academic honors society for two years. I was a member of the Pre-Dental club and the UNL Honors Program.
  • Something you are looking forward to this academic year as a UCARE ambassador:  I have enjoyed being a research ambassador because research has given me so much, both in terms of my academic career and important life skills. I think students find it intimating to get involved in undergraduate research. I enjoy sharing my story of how I got involved and how at UNL it really is easier than it seems.
  • Plans after graduation:  I am currently applying to dental school and plan to attend school in the fall of 2015. I am also planning on studying abroad to Spain this coming spring.
  • Hobbies/interests: I am an avid runner, which is something I do a lot in my free time. I am also addicted to Nextflix and like to unwind from a long day by watching a tv show.
